Are You Letting Great Ideas Bubble to the Top SKILLS ARE NEEDED When I sit down to write, I allow my thoughts to wander.   I ask myself, “Kathleen, what has caught your attention the most this week?” …And the phrase that keeps coming to mind is â€" profoundly disconnected. Here’s what we should all know by now.   There’s a generational gap in the workforce that has caused a skills gap.   Let me quote Mike Rowe, host of Discovery Channel’s show Dirty Jobs.   He succinctly presents the facts “A trillion dollars in student loans. Record high unemployment. Three million good jobs that no one seems to want. The goal of Profoundly Disconnected is to challenge the absurd belief that a four-year degree is the only path to success. The Skills Gap is here, and if we don’t close it, it’ll swallow us all…” Every generation wants the next to do better and to have more.   My parents wanted us to work in an air conditioned office.   They wanted us to work with our minds, not our hands.   Well, Mom and Dad, we’ve succeeded…on the surface. In the quest to “do better than our parents” and have a better life, we’ve lost a lot…and have become profoundly egotistical. The skills gap that exists in the United States is the result of shifting attitudes over several generations.   Our egos have outgrown the square footage of the country and we’re all now experts in something or other.    There’s a never ending list of fancy job titles attached to our names….but what is it that we DO?!   I can’t help but chuckle at my own title, “Relationship Specialist”.   I guess I thought it sounded better than, “A chick who likes to fight to save the relationship.” SKILLS ARE NEEDED …and I’m not talking just about the “soft skills”.   Let’s get back to re-building America from the inside out.
